E-scooter Convenience against injuries, or why Galicians call electric scooters "Khrushkas"?

Traffic Safety Week started on April 15. Our task is to prevent traffic injuries. Let's talk about a type of transportation popular among young people - an electric scooter.

In Kyiv - people on electric scooters are called "standing riders", in Lviv - more often - "khrushches": according to one version - because of the similarity with a crowd of khrushches, according to another - because of the crunching sound during a road accident.

Electric scooters are a new trend. They became popular in Ukraine during the lockdown, when it was difficult to use public transport. Moreover, E-scooters are mobile, affordable and environmentally friendly. People began to use this type of transport more often, because they can reach their destination without delays.

All fans of this type of transport should take care of their own safety and remember that they are also participants in road traffic, albeit with an uncertain status.

That is why drivers of electric scooters, like all other road users, must strictly comply with the requirements of traffic rules, move on a bicycle path or on the edge of the roadway. It is necessary to use a helmet, knee pads and reflective equipment for protection. It is worth keeping an eye on the serviceability of the electric scooter (if it is your own vehicle).

It is obvious that despite its convenience, accessibility and environmental friendliness, this type of movement is dangerous. Failure to observe or ignore the safety rules for driving an electric scooter leads to accidents. Most often, these are craniocerebral injuries, hand fractures. Concussions and concussions can have neurological consequences. Pedestrians suffer due to collisions of electric scooters.

There are several reasons for this:

- When moving through the streets on an E-scooter, people often do not follow traffic rules

- The majority of people using this type of transport do not wear protective helmets

- There are many who drive at high speed, sometimes together, and even with children

- Movement with an E-scooter is almost silent, and for large vehicles, it is sometimes not visible

- Children like to ride electric scooters and bicycles around the neighborhood, so they are often left unsupervised

- And also - the lack of fear inherent in young people, which prompts them to dangerous "feats"

All these factors, unfortunately, contribute to injury. So, let us remind you of the simple rules that will save the life and health of your child who uses a scooter or a bicycle.

To avoid dangerous situations, the following rules must be observed:

- A helmet is a must: statistics show that this simple accessory can reduce the risk of serious head injuries by 70%. Make sure your child always wears a high-quality helmet when riding an electric scooter, bicycle.

- Monitor the technical condition of the electric scooter, bicycle: faulty brakes can lead to loss of control. It is important to monitor the condition of the vehicle to avoid malfunctions.

- Equipped electric scooter, bicycle with a light: the child will have a better view of the road, and, in addition, it will be more visible to other road users.

- Children should ride electric scooters and bicycles in safe areas. Children should generally avoid major main roads.

- When riding an electric scooter, a bicycle, a child must follow a bicycle path or keep to the right side of the road.

Keep yourselves!
