First symptoms: what is the difference between a cold and the flu?

The number of diseases caused by these respiratory viral infections during the epidemic season, which begins in Ukraine in October and ends in the spring, is predicted to increase.

So, since the beginning of October, more than 1.5 million Ukrainians have fallen ill with SARS, flu and COVID-19.

From December 4 to 10, 155,539 Ukrainians fell ill, 4,652 were hospitalized. 10,869 cases of COVID-19 were identified, 2,083 patients required inpatient medical care.

First symptoms: what is the difference between a cold and the flu?

Respiratory viral infection (cold - Ed.) is often called "flu", although the difference between them is significant - both in terms of the dynamics of the disease's development and its complications.

The flu starts suddenly. Often at the beginning of the disease there is a severe headache and muscle pain, fever, weakness and pronounced fatigue.

A cold, on the other hand, develops over several days, and often people endure it "on their feet". It usually starts with a sore throat and a runny nose.

For several days, a person has a sore throat, a stuffy nose, a slightly elevated temperature, weakness and a headache.

First symptoms: what is the difference between the flu and COVID-19?

The flu begins with a sudden rise in temperature, and respiratory symptoms - cough, difficulty breathing, mucus secretion and sore throat - are added later.

While COVID-19 begins, on the contrary, with respiratory symptoms.

The influenza virus primarily affects the upper respiratory tract and lungs, and in addition, the heart muscle and the inner surface of blood vessels.

This was shown by recent research at Ohio State University (USA). That is why the most common complications of the flu are inflammation of the lungs (pneumonia), heart failure, and thrombosis.

In addition, the course of the flu aggravates chronic diseases, in particular diabetes, bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, etc.

Risk groups for a severe course of the disease include:

☛ pregnant women,

☛ children under 5 years old,

☛ people over 60 years old,

☛ people with chronic diseases.

Algorithm of actions during the disease:

At the first signs of the disease, it is necessary to consult a family doctor, do not resort to self-medication, and during illness take care of the safety of relatives and colleagues (stay at home, use individual dishes).

Vaccination is recognized as the most effective way to strengthen immunity against influenza and COVID-19 in the world. Influenza vaccination is recommended every season.

You can buy a Korean or French flu vaccine at a pharmacy. Both vaccines have passed state quality control.

In addition, all regions are provided with a free vaccine against COVID-19.

Vaccination can be done at vaccination points or at the outpatient clinic through an appointment with your family doctor.

Doctors use vaccines: "Janssen" (manufacturer "Johnson&Johnson") and "Comirnaty" (manufacturer "Pfizer").

Also available is a vaccine against COVID-19 for children from 5 years of age (manufacturer Pfizer - Comirnaty vaccine for children).

Influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations can be given at the same time.
