VACCINATION AGAINST COVID-19: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BOOSTER DOSE AND PRIORITY POPULATION GROUPS

An increase in the number of cases of COVID-19 has been registered both in the state as a whole and in the Lviv region in recent weeks. In the region, according to the monitoring of the incidence of acute respiratory viral infections, in the 39th week of 2023 (September 25-October 1, 2023), 7,700 cases of acute respiratory viral infections (307.2 per 100,000) were registered against 7,261 cases (289.7 per 100,000 population) for the previous week (an increase in incidence by 5.7%), in the 40th week (02-08.10.2023) there were 9,135 cases (an increase of 15.7% compared to the 39th week of the year). It should be taken into account that not all patients with symptoms of cold infections seek medical help. Regarding patients with COVID-19, there were 288 cases from 09.18 to 24.09.2023, and 445 were registered from 09.25 to 10.01.2023.

During the COVID-19 epidemic in Ukraine, there were more than 5.5 million confirmed cases of the disease, of which more than 112,000 people died, in the region, respectively, almost 335,000 fell ill and 6,932 died.

The above shows that COVID-19 has not disappeared and continues to affect the population, especially children and the elderly. And the only specific method of prevention of this disease is vaccination.

The National Technical Group of Experts on Immunoprophylaxis (NTGEI) has determined the priority population groups for vaccination against COVID-19, as well as the position regarding the procedure for receiving booster doses against COVID-19 during the epidemic season of 2023-2024. The Ministry of Health by Order No. 1700 of September 27, 2023 approved the position of the technical group of experts.

According to the conclusions of NTGEI, the recommended course of primary vaccination against COVID-19 and the first booster consists of 3 vaccinations.

The first booster is administered 5 months after the primary vaccination.

Persons who are at risk of a severe course of the disease are recommended to be vaccinated with an additional booster six months after the previous one.

Persons at risk of a severe course of COVID-19 are:

- older than 60 years;

- with serious concomitant diseases;

- medical workers.

Persons who have a violation of the vaccination schedule or who have not received the second dose of the vaccine or the first booster dose are recommended to make up for them at the first opportunity. The minimum interval before the first booster dose is at least 5 months for adults and 6 months for children.

The following additional booster doses are administered at 6-month intervals on the recommendation of a doctor after the previous vaccination.

You can get vaccinated by contacting your family doctor or vaccination centers.

Vaccination against COVID-19 helps prevent severe cases of the disease and complications. However, even if a person has completed a full vaccination course, safety rules should be observed: keep a distance of at least 1 meter from a person with cold symptoms, use a mask in public places, wash hands more often and disinfect surfaces.

COVID-19 is spread by airborne droplets. You can also become infected by touching your eyes, nose, or mouth after contact with an infected object or surface.

Among the most common symptoms of the disease are a persistent cough, high fever, loss or change in the normal sense of taste or smell. If such symptoms appear, you should immediately consult a family doctor.
